Week 11

Week 11 already... wow. This week I want you to take a step back from your research and do a reflection of the research process thus far. What has been the hardest thing? What has been the easiest? If you could start over again what would you do differently? How has keeping a blog (yes I know it was required) helped you track your research process? How will it help in your final paper?

Week 9 blog question

Yes, I know it is just about spring break (and there is no blog question next week during break), but you need a question for this week. :-) By now you should have visited your site a few times, interviewed one or two people, gathered research and have a good head start on your portfolio, all which is great. We started talking at the beginning of the semester on the benefits of fieldwork and what you can give back by doing your research. So, what can your give back to your community? You should know a good deal at this point, so what does your community need that you can provide them? What is your contribution? (to the community? to our class? to your own education?) Think about it.

Revisions

I must have your revision by 2 pm on Friday Feb. 29th...not 2:01 or 3pm.. 2pm! You can bring it to my office on Friday, slide it under my office door in RB (I will be there at 2), or bring it to class on Thursday.

Your revision will have 2 parts:

1.) You need to revise your annotated bib itself.
2.) You need to write a 2 page reflection explaining why you didn't do the assignment completely (mis-communication, ran out of time, didn't research enough), why you depended on EBSCOhost or citation machine to do your citations (didn't understand MLA, didn't think to check the citations, didn't want to do it) and why it is important to understand how to do citations. I want an honest response, so if you were just lazy and didn't care about the grade but you do now, tell me and then explain why.
3.) You need to turn back in your graded annotated bib.

You do not have to do a revision. It is just an option for you.

Week 8

For this week I want you to answer the following questions:

- What is the main theme that you see running through your research? If you have talked to some members in your community, does that theme seem to run through your site as well?
- As of today, 8 weeks into this project, what is your place in the culture? Is it similar to different to where you were 8 weeks ago? What changed?

Week 7 Blog Question

What type of plan have you come up with to finish your mini-ethnography? Do you need more research on a specific topic? Do you need to spend more time in your community? How do you plan on spending that time: interviewing? observing? participating in activities? In other words, how do you plan on finishing this assignment?

Tuesday, February 12, 2008

Week 6

Can you make any general conclusions about your community as of right now? And if so, what are those conclusions? Do you think that what you have been observing is specific to your community or that it would be the same if you want to that community on a different campus (for example, would what you are observing in a Frat at Ball State be the same at the same Frat at Kent State?)

In-Class Note taker

Starting tomorrow we will have a note taker in class. This person is to take notes during their scheduled time. After you take notes you are to type them up and post them as a comment to this blog post. That way if you are absent you can look at the notes from your classmate. How you take your notes is up to you. This is for a grade and is to give you practice as you keep visiting your site.

The first person takes notes from 3:30 to 4:05. The second person takes notes from 4:05 to 4:40. Keep track of time as you take notes

Feb 7th (1) Robby S. (2) Kimmie P.
Feb 12th (1) Gabe P. (2) Emily G.
Feb 14th (1) Karly W. (2) Courtney A.

Week 5 blog question

What kinds of sources have you gathered so far for your project? Have you found information in your sources that connect to what you are observing? What haven't you found that you are still looking for?

If you are having trouble remembering how to do the MLA heading, visit the Purdue OWL here.

Week 4 blog question

What are academic sources? Why do so many instructors insist that you only use academic sources in your work? What are examples of places where you could use non-academic sources? What do you consider non-academic sources?

Monday, January 21, 2008

Week 3 blog question

Hopefully at this point in class you have figured out where you are going to do your fieldwork at. So, where have you picked to do your research? If you were to stop someone walking down the street and ask them what they think of your site, what would they say? Who belongs to this subculture?

Site Visits

You should have a minimum of 10 contact hours at your site. You could visit your site 10 times for an hour or 20 times for a half an hour... as long as it adds up to 10 hours. Now you can have more than 10 hours, but at least 10. In addition to visiting, you need to have 10 fieldnote entries or reflections (that will be placed in your research portfolio).

Fieldsites

Some things to consider as you are picking your site:
1. Should be a safe location
2. Should be legal
3. Should be unfamiliar to you
4. Should be connected to the university in some way
5. Should be a place you can regularly visit
6. Participants should be 18 and older
7. Should have a meeting time that works with your schedule
8. Members should recognize themselves as a group (subculture)
9 Should be interesting to you.

Week 2 Blog question

What type of factors are you considering as your start to explore possible cultures to focus on this semester? Is any one factor more important than the others? Are you looking to learn something specific or are you open to learn whatever you can?

Welcome to English 104!

Hello Class and welcome to English 104. I am excited to start this semester and I hope you are as well. This blog site will be used in conjunction with our course website (http://nicaswell.iweb.bsu.edu). The purpose of your blog is to have a location where you can post your ideas throughout the semester -- a work in progress for your final paper. When it comes time to write your final paper, you should be able to work some of your posts into your drafts. Each week I will post a question. You are responsible for responding to that question and responding to two classmates' posts. You will also post some inclass work and homework to your blog site, that way when you are putting together your research portfolio you will know where things are. With all of that said, let's get started!
